GLSEN Tucson update
February 3, 2012
We had several regulars in attendance at our meeting yesterday and one new person. Welcome, Kevin! We did not collect any data from Cienega GSA because no one from Cienega came to our meeting. Our discussion about a possible leadership retreat/picnic for February or March concluded that a great deal of effort is required to produce even a minimal response from students. That is now on hold. No one had any information regarding the local outcome of No Name-Calling Week. At least two schools are working on Day of Silence activities. There are a few GSA students working on their applications for the GLSEN Tucson Scholarship. The deadline for application is April 15, 2012. The Tucson High Magnet School staff attended an anti-bullying workshop presented by Dr. Bowman of the University of Arizona. It was reported that some TUSD students are being harassed because of gender/identity and that some of the offenders are bus drivers and school monitors. It was suggested that GLSEN Tucson ask TUSD to present sensitivity trainings on GLBT issues. It was also recommended that TUSD survey their drop-out students to see why they are leaving the district. "Bullying" should be included on the exit form. Raytheon GLBTA is hoping to sponsor a barbecue to benefit homeless GLBT youth. A tentative March 31, 2012 date has been set with Reid Park as the venue. LGBTQ Affairs at the U of A is coordinating the fundraising. We still need your donations. Make checks payable to GLSEN Tucson and mail them to 4800 W. Placita del Quetzal, Tucson AZ 85745. Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. in the small meeting room of the Martha Cooper Library. dld |
