April meeting updateApr 02, 2010
Our final meeting of this school year was held Thursday, April 1 at Colors Restaurant. Considering that several districts are on Spring Break, we actually had a nice turnout. Cienega High School’s GSA is back up and running with some 25 students in attendance at the last couple of weeks. They are actively planning for their Day of Silence. Rincon High School’s GSA is also planning an active role in Day of Silence. Star Academy may not do much with Day of Silence, but they have added a GLBT Studies class to their curriculum! Way to go Moorea!!!!
A huge thanks to Melissa and Matt for all they have done for GLSEN through the GLBT Chamber of Commerce! They will be leaving us, but they introduced Jim Wilson as the Chamber Representative taking their places. WELCOME Jim! And Gretchen, from Job Corps is leaving Tucson and moving to Florida, so we won’t have her with us in the fall. Good luck to Gretchen in the future. Issues continue with TUSD students being able to access donations of Tax Credit funds and we will have to continue to work on that. Also, a reminder about the upcoming May 18 special election to vote on Proposition 100, the 1 Cent Sales Tax to help fund education. It is exceptionally important that everyone vote on May 18. If the proposed Sales Tax passes, all K-12 education in the State of Arizona will be cut by 8% below current funding. If Prop 100 does NOT pass, all education will be cut by at least 16% below current levels!!!!! We will recess our monthly meetings for May, June, and July, and will meet again on Thursday, August 5. We will ask Diane to work on finding us a place for our continued meetings and will let you know. Enjoy the upcoming HEAT of our wonderful Arizona desert! |
