Feb. 4 Update

Meeting notes and upcoming events

Feb 07, 2010
We had a good turnout at our February 4 GLSEN Tucson meeting, held at the Cooper Library. The big item is the full-day February 19 Student Leadership Retreat to be held at the Holiday Inn on Palo Verde Road. There are more than 120 students signed up to attend, along with many accompanying adults. A HUGE thank you goes to the planning committee as well as to the GLBT Chamber of Commerce. Matt Harding has been wonderful to work with, securing the venue and giving us the best possible pricing. Thanks to Barb and Michell for ordering and procuring the video for us—I’m sure the students will enjoy it. I hope as many as possible will stop in that day to see the wonderful things that we are doing. Also, Kiwi, our Chapter Buddy from the national office, will be visiting us that day.

On the evening of February 19, when all the work for the retreat has been done, we will have a short “meet & greet” with Kiwi at Colors Restaurant at 5:00 pm. All are welcome to stop in and say hello. It is a strictly “buy your own” event.

All of the GSA’s represented at the meeting are planning events for Day of Silence, coming soon. Please let us know what your group plans to do.

As a result of the November article in the New York Times “Can a Boy Wear a Dress to School”, Fox News Phoenix was assigned to do a story on students in Arizona. Alan was interviewed by their news team on February 3, as was a student from Tucson Magnet High School and her mother. No information on when that will be aired. We’ll let folks know.

Reminder to GSA sponsors and counselors, the GLSEN Scholarship application packets are due by Aril 15. Our next GLSEN Tucson meeting will be on March 4 at 4:30 at the Cooper Library.
