Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network

OUR MISSION

The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

GLSEN Southwest New Hampshire is a chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

Nationally, GLSEN works to ensure safe schools for ALL students, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. There are over 40 Chapters around the country, which work closely with the national staff of GLSEN to implement programs, and to keep national staff informed of local events. The work that chapters do covers a variety of subjects and issues, from public policy to teacher training to supporting students and educators around the country.

Chapters like ours play an important role in bringing GLSEN’s programs and visions to local communities. While some chapters have full-time or part-time staff, most -- including ours -- are entirely volunteer-based. We’re always looking for new volunteers to help us ensure safe schools for all students.

Please explore our website to find out more about our work here in Southwest New Hampshire and to learn about how you can get involved in local and national events. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions that are not answered on this site. Thank you for you interest and we’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Here's an update on Our Recent Activities and Programs!

The Chapter this year has been involved in several educator training programs, including the National Education Association Training Program on School Safety, Bias, and LGBT Issues in Education, The Keene State University Safe Zone Program and the School for International Training Masters of Arts in Teaching Program.

Sessions on Creating Safe Schools for All Students and/or Classroom Resources for Addressing Bias were given to k-12 educators at the NEA-NH New and Preservice Teachers Conference and the Fall Instructional Conference in 2006, as well as at the Preservice and New Teacher Conference in April of 2007.

We recently completed two half-hour presentations for education majors at Keene State College on making one's class more welcoming and safe for students who may be questioning or already know their sexual orientation; and participated in a Keene State College masters-level counselor training class panel discussion around GLBT issues and how to make one's counseling practice safe for GLBT students.

At the November New Hampshire Parent Teacher Association State Conference, we sponsored an Information table with other vendors and enjoyed casual conversation with attendees as we handed out information.
