First GSA Small Grant Awarded to Gloucester High School
Feb 04, 2008
The GLSEN Richmond Board of Directors recently approved the first GSA Small Grant Award of $165 to the GSA at Gloucester High School. The club had requested the funds to purchase 200 Day of Silence buttons for their 2008 Day of Silence program on April 25, 2008. The club had an enormously successful Day of Silence last April, with over 200 participants and distributing over 1,000 speaking cards in their one-day program. For more information about Day of Silence, visit www.dayofsilence.org
The GSA Small Grants Program operated by GLSEN Richmond is designed to provide financial support for programs and activities sponsored by GSA clubs in their school. The programs supported by the Grant Program should be designed to help increase tolerance for diversity at the school, or to help the GSA club build a strong organization. Past grants included funding for a Breaking the Ice party after the Day of Silence, t-shirts for Day of Silence participants, books for a school's library, and printing of brochures about joining the school's GSA club.
The current GSA Small Grants Program is funded through a grant to GLSEN Richmond by the Youth Philanthropy Project of The Community Foundation. The Youth Philanthropy Project funds programs by youth designed to improve their community. The first GSA Small Grants Program was funded by the Richmond Gay Community Foundation.
