GLSEN Phoenix Announces "A=Art Auction 2008"

Dozens of artists and entertainers to fund raise for LGBT-supportive programs
Dec 10, 2007

Phoenix — The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network Phoenix chapter is hosting its “A=Art” Auction 2008. The evening event, set for 7-11 p.m., Saturday, January 19, will be held at downtown art space the Alwun House at 1204 E. Roosevelt Street in Phoenix. Art, including jewelry, paintings, ceramics, sculptures and much more will be available for purchase. Nearly 50 artists have already agreed to donate art to the event. In addition to a wide variety of amazing art, you’ll be delighted with the entertainment line-up we have this year. Complimentary drinks and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided for a donation at the door, no ticket required.

Local artist and GLSEN art auction coordinator Kristine Kollasch is planning for a great turn out. This is the largest fundraiser GLSEN Phoenix holds, and could bring in more than a third of the nonprofit organization’s
annual budget.

“The artists we’ve assembled have contributed some of their most fantastic, creative pieces of art,” noted Kollasch. “No matter what kind of art you like, we’ll have a wide variety to choose from. More importantly, every purchase goes to raise money for our work with LGBT students and their allies.”

Funds raised from the event will go to support the work of GLSEN’s Phoenix chapter, including educator and staff training on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues; support for student-led gay-straight alliances; and advocacy for LGBT-inclusive anti-bullying standards statewide. Sponsors for the event are still being accepted.

“Our work goes beyond inclusive policies to support students or teachers who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender,” said Arizona State University associate professor Madelaine Adelman, co-chair of GLSEN Phoenix. “We are trying to make schools safe for every student, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity. The art auction is great for us, because it gets our message out…but it’s also a lot of fun!” In 2006, more than 300 people attended GLSEN’s A=Art Auction, raising more than $10,000 for the cause of safer schools. Individuals with questions about the event should visit www.glsen.org/phoenix/ or call 602-705-9780. GLSEN is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible.
