Breaking the Silence

High School and College GSAs Come together to Break the Silence
Apr 25, 2008

More than 40 area students came together on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY to break the vow of silence they had held during the 2008 National Day of Silence.

The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. This year’s event was held in memory of Lawrence King, a California 8th-grader who was shot and killed Feb. 12 by a classmate because of his sexual orientation and gender expression.

Hudson Valley students opened their Breaking the Silence event by paying tribute to Lawrence King and sharing their personal experiences from the day.

The evening was capped off with a dj, dancing and refreshments.

Thanks to the Marist College QSA for sponsoring the event.
