Breaking the Silence Rally and ConcertApr 17, 2009

The Dallas chapter of GLSEN, in partnership with SMU's SPECTRUM, will be calling for community organizations to join with the Day of Silence student participants for the 2nd Annual DFW Breaking the Silence Rally.

The event, designed to show support for schools that are free from violence and harassment, will be held at 7:00 p.m. on April 17 on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

The 11th annual GAYla Prom will be held on Saturday, May 3, at SMU's Hughes-Trigg ballroom. This year's theme is "Red Carpet". We are expecting 350 - 400 attendees. The prom is a safe, supportive event for LGBTQ youth and their supporters. The prom is open to ages 14 - 22. The majority of attendees are in the 15 - 19 age range. The Day of Silence is an annual event held to bring attention to anti-LGBT bullying, harassment and discrimination in schools. Students and teachers nationwide will observe the day in silence to echo the silence that LGBT and ally students face everyday. The Day of Silence is one of the largest student-led actions in the country.

Lawrence King, a 15-year-old Oxnard, California student who was murdered at school on February 12 for being gay, will be memorialized on Sunday, March 9 by the Dallas LGBTQA community. A vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road, Dallas, Texas 75235. The event is free and open to all.
