Safe Schools Trainings

In-school trainings are a central part of GLSEN's mission to create safe schools.

GLSEN Boston conducts age-specific trainings for faculty and students at all grade levels from Pre-K through college. Faculty trainings provide a rationale for addressing respect in schools, highlighting the harmful effects that homophobia has on school communities and presenting solutions to create a safer environment for students and educators alike.

Trainings for students are designed to provide young people with the tools they need to make a difference in their schools and communities, empowering them to take part in the movement to end anti-LGBT harassment and discrimination in all K-12 schools. Training topics may include responding to homophobic jokes and comments, organizing days of action, and strategies students can use to make their schools safe spaces.

In the past three years alone, we have trained 1,100 youths, 1,200 teachers
and 45 schools whose collective classrooms contain more than 13,000 students.

In addition to organized trainings and events, GLSEN also provides day-to-day support to teachers and students through resource provision, specific issue consultation, and curriculum development. We provide assistance to Gay-Straight Alliances in middle and high schools through one-on-one consultants and periodic seminars.

GLSEN also offers resources such as The GLSEN Lunchbox, a comprehensive 'do-it-yourself' training kit aimed at providing educators and community members with the background knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to make schools safer and more affirming places for LGBT students. Because the needs of educators vary greatly from one community to another, The GLSEN Lunchbox encompasses a broad range of strategies and provides a flexible structure.
